THE WHEEL OF MISFORTUNE
|
Black Jack, 2008 Antique Wool Union Jack, Tassie Oak Frame, 3.6m x 1.8m Black Jack twists the iconic imagery of the Union Jack. The Union Jack has become an internationally recognisable brand, associations with commercial, national, ideological, musical and fashionable ideals are well understood. It’s historical significance is the focus of this piece, particularity in its association to the Australian flag and Australian history. Black Jack is literally a Union Jack dyed black, this act alters its reading considerably. The Dark work sits behind Perspex causing it to reflect enormously which places the viewer forever in the field of view. This places the viewer and the context into the same space, tying the two together making it difficult to remove yourself or dissociate from it. |
